Immunocytochemistry and protein blotting of caspase-3. Immunocytochemistry was performed 24 h after treatments using antibody against cleaved caspase-3 (green color) and counterstained with DAPI (blue color). Western blots were performed using antibodies against cleaved caspase-3 in the nuclear fraction. Beta-tubulin served as an internal control. Relative band intensities were measured and presented in the bar graph. Cleaved caspase-3 protein band intensity increased from 13.6 ± 0.8 in control to 25.5 ± 1.5 after glutamate incubation and concurrent treatment of selenite reduced it to 18.7 ± 1.2. F(2, 29) = 67.5. *p < 0.05 and **p < 0.01 versus control; # p < 0.05 versus Glutamate by ANOVA with post hoc Tukey’s test. N = 10 in each group
