Brain activation during anticipation and experience. The red regions (clusters) denoted the brain activation during the anticipation period. The result indicated that the bilateral striatum, insular cortex, superior temporal gyrus and left anterior cingulate cortex were significantly activated (Random Effect: P uncorrected = 0.0001, K = 30). During the anticipation period (regions mark in red), the insular cortex and basal forebrain rather than the medial prefrontal cortex dominated the generation of subjective feeling and guided the decision-making. On the other hand, during the experience period (regions mark in green), the inferior parietal lobule, superior frontal gyrus and middle frontal gyrus were involved in the consequence assessment of monetary decision (Random Effect: P uncorrected = 0.0001, K = 30). The thresholds were adjusted for visualization and discussion purpose.
