Effect of calpain and caspase inhibitors on glutamate-induced cell death in primary cortical cells. Primary cortical cells isolated from 18 day old fetal rat brains were cultured for 7–8 days and treated with 1 mM glutamate alone or in the presence of the optimal concentration of 12.5 μM calpain inhibitor ALLN and 50 μM z-DEVD caspase-3 inhibitor. LDH release (% maximum) was measured after 6 hrs of treatment *P < 0.05 compared to control; † P < 0.05 compared to glutamate alone.
