A) In the nonconscious + fear task, a 26-ms presentation of a fearful face was followed by a 174-ms presentation of a neutral face of the same individual to mask the fearful face. B) In the nonconscious + neutral task, a 26-ms presentation of a neutral face was masked by a 174-ms presentation of a neutral face of another individual. C) Instead of a facial image, a specific symbol was randomly presented to maintain alertness, to which participants were asked to respond by pushing a button.
