An example of complex behavior for Liley’s reduced model. On the left, resonant points (R2, R3, R4) emerge in a two parameters bifurcation diagram for changes in the thalamocortical input (pee, pei). These bifurcations give rise to quasiperiodic oscillations among different EEG bands. The superposed colored area is an evaluation of the dynamical activity for different values of (pee, pei), using maximal Lyapunov exponents. In a sea of (yellow) oscillatory patterns, a v-shaped chaotic area (in red) emerges. On the right, an example of attractor and its associated time series corresponding to such chaotic area is depicted.
