Schematic model summarizing the possible role of the three NOS isoforms in the aging cerebellum. The NO produced by eNOS and nNOS facilitates the learning and memory processes in the cerebellum through the NO-GMPc-PKC pathway. During aging, cerebellar cells accumulate reactive oxygen species which in turn can react with the iNOS-derived NO and form peroxynitrite that causes cell damage and death.
