  1. Average numbers of young neurons, visualized immunohistochemically through Doublecortin (DCX), are obtained from stereological estimates using the optical fractionator method. Proliferating cells (Ki67 positive cells) and pyknotic cells are counted manually and multiplied by the section fraction to estimate total cell numbers. All parameters were analyzed in every sixth section. SD stands for standard deviation and CE is coefficient of error. *Values are means with ranges in parentheses.
